The Chaco
Paraguay’s western region, the Chaco, is one of the most sparsely populated areas in South America. It is a dry savannah area and has been heavily deforested in recent years. Chaco is known for its cultural, religious and economic diversity. Many of the region’s residents are of indigenous descent and maintain their culture. In the region around Filadelfia, a large community of Mennonites live in close harmony with a number of different groups of indigenous peoples, ensuring a higher standard of e.g. education and health care, while the indigenous population does the hard work on the land
